The Goddess The DZI and The implosions

June 15, 2010

The Goddess is an interesting subject. I am an American Catholic, so, I do not call them “Goddesses” because of any religious views. They get that name because I am fascinated with Greek Mythology, and that is what my customers call them.  To me, the subject isn’t what this is about.  The form, and its likeness to the landscape is really where my interest is.  Another thought is the liberation of women, and the freedom to feel how we feel, and communicate that.  Communicate how we feel. These gestures are free form.  The scale is anatomically correct, and the body lye’s where my muse places it. These are not planned out to be mathematically correct, or even “color theory” correct. Just the feeling of the moment. The souls voice.

One of a kind at my Etsy shop!

Dzi beads. Are they agate stones that were found and painted? Or, are they glass beads made from WAY back whenever ago, and lost in the ground, and found in Tibet?  This one is glass. Available at Etsy. Each figure is helping to put the dzi design together, and celebrating that. (My muse Wishes it was 3′ tall!)  The pendant is made with Sterling Silver wire (18 gauge), and sterling silver beads. One of a kind at my Etsy shop!

Implosions are one of my favorites to make. Always a happy surprise. Each one is made one at a time above a flame.  Heat and gravity allow the colors to fall; experience allows me to control that.

All of these are for sale at the Etsy shop.

Earth Goddess, Lampwork glass by Sheila Morley

Earth Goddess, Lampwork glass by Sheila Morley

Looking back at my “quietly being an Artist” time period…..

In the 80’s I discovered my passion for creating art. In the 90’s I decided to make it a career choice. In LATE ’97 (After Art college) I realized I needed to purchase health insurance and build a studio. I took the best paying job I could find in 1997. (I knew it would take a while to get established.)  So, by 2004 the studio was done.

All the art from this time period (my 80’s to 2004) is still in my possession today. (Except for the few pieces I sold or gave away.)  Studies, mostly with pencil, some clay, some ink… The drawers and boxes of art are almost ridiculous!  I am not sure why I didn’t give it away, or even try to sell it. To me, they are just studies, I guess. One thing for sure, in the back of my head, I did not think my work was good enough to sell, and I always thought “what if it doesn’t sell? How will I pay the bills?”…it became a worry, (not a productive thing for me to concentrate on). I took a job to pay my bills, and continued creating when ever I could.  I could not be objective about my own art for a very long time. Not until after Art school, really.  It was all personal.  The older I get, the more I realize how other people can relate to my personal experiences. I have seen my work becoming more Universal. I can see it speaking to its audience now.

I was (and still am) determined on a very passionate level to create art.  I have tampered with copper pipe, ceramics, cement, stained glass, bronze, paper casting…the list goes on.   (Hands down, melting glass is the best. Working with glass you can do all of those techniques. You can do everything with glass; structurally and visually.) If these passionate creations can help support my family, so be it. For now, I think it is great, that at the very least it pays for itself, and puts food onthe table (usually; right now internet sales are WAY down!).

After all that, I just now realized that I am a closet Artist. (And, just imagine how many there must be?)  The creation process is a passion. And I am so excited to celebrate it every single day.

I am going to be a closet Artist forever, for the rest of my life! For today, I am on line here blogging, and trying to do some family fund raising…. in real life, I am out there (after the other job, two kids, a home…), I will always be creating; I will always have a closet art stash. Some of it, maybe only I will see. Until I am gone, and it becomes antique. It would be cool if my work supports my extended family some day. (And it is really cool that I am not starving today; as my Dad says, “We are not taking part in this recession.”)

With that said, I have decided to share some more sketch book study, and some ‘NEVER been seen before in cyber space’ sculptures.

Yup! My old art is coming out of the closet, looking forward to some constructive crtiticism in 2009.

This next week is all about getting some autocad drawings done of a new lab at Michigan state University, and preparing for holiday events.

Wish you all a happy holiday season. Peace, joy, Love…

(Oh! and if you are a closet Artist…closet art can make a great Christmas gift!)

(That there Earth Goddess is for sale at the Etsy shop!)

Red hote poker focal bead by Sheila Morley
Red hot poker focal bead by Sheila Morley

Recently I have started putting more hours to my “other” job. The reality is that, this art is becoming the “other” job, and that job is becoming the *real* job.

No, I am not taking that personally, and I am not blaming this economy. It is just the way it is.  Time is what I have 😉
THANK GOD!
In order to have two jobs, two kids, a life to cater to, and be happy…I have decided to make some changes; and I am telling you what I have decided.  I am going to be happy, enjoy life, and get my jobs done the best I can.
My Etsy shop will continue to have one or two new items a week.
(This “red hot poker” implosion is New at the Etsy shop 10-12-08.)
(I am having a BE HAPPY ECONOMY SALE! There will be auctions starting as low as $9.99 ALL OF OCTOBER!)
Shipping will take place on Tuesday’s and Friday’s after payment is received. (Lots of FREE shipping auctions going on this month too! In honor of our super happy to be economy!)
I will be doing local shows in Michigan (Metro Detroit area)
All is well here. As long as we BUY LOCAL! Support our neighbors in our country, we will be fine.
I will be at the Dearborn Glass art academy (December 6, and 7 2008) selling art, and visiting with some FANTASTIC Artists.  One o f my favorite things about them (aside from their kindness and talent) is the attitude they have that is going to help keep this place a better place…AND, I quote the note on the website; “Keep the Dollar Local.  Purchasing artwork, taking a class, or participating in a special event at the Glass Academy is a great way to support the local art scene and economy. Thanks for your support!”  Did you know they promote recycling, and going green too?  The Dearborn Glass art academy is a place everyone should visit.
The Winter wonders Glass art show is coming up! (BIRMINGHAM MICHIGAN! Saturday, November ST) MANY LOCAL Artists (members of GLASSACT guild) come together to offer their passionate creations for sale. ONE of a kind pieces. These Artist’s know what the economy is doing to the middle class. This is reflected in our pricing. PLEASE COME support the local Artist’s.  Jewelry, sculpture, dishes, wall art, paper weights, marbles (the perfect round objects MANY people collect!)  Animals, and cute stuff, elegant, and contemporary FINE art. Lets make this place, here in Michigan happy this holiday season. Great prices, beautiful creations! WONDERFUL gifts!
I will keep the blog posted at least one time a week, and I do plan more murrini art talk, and some more sketch book study. As time allows.
Thanks for reading.
